New/First Applicants

Each salesperson shall carry the license and exhibit upon demand to any inspector of the bureau, pursuant to ORC 4517.10
Persons who have not held a valid Ohio Salespersons License during the past (12) months are considered new/first applicants and must submit the following:

1. APPLICATION FOR LICENSE (BMV 4301) All blanks must be completed and legible. Incomplete and/or illegible applications will result in a delay in licensing. WRITING "SALES EVENT" AT THE TOP OF THE APPLICATION WILL HELP US KNOW TO MAKE THESE A PRIORITY.
2. Submit application and fee to the address on the form. Make checks payable to: Treasurer State of Ohio.
3. Background check

All Ohio Residents must be electronically fingerprinted and have the results forwarded to the Dealer Licensing Section, PO Box 16521, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6521. NOTE: Electronic fingerprinting prices vary and payable to the company taking the print.

Out-of-state residents may submit a fingerprint card in lieu of electronic prints. An exemption form must also be completed. Please call to obtain a fingerprint card and current processing fee.

Out-of-State residents may submit the fingerprint card and processing fee with the completed salesperson application and exemption form to the address on form. Do not send the fingerprint card directly to B.C.I & I. Acceptable fingerprint card(s) may be obtained only by contacting the Dealer Licensing Section at (614)752-7636. Please make sure all information on the fingerprint card is completed.

Applicant Eligibility

Any felony or misdemeanor conviction relating to dealing in motor vehicles is reason for denial.

• If B.C.I & I reports that if a person has ever been arrested, for any reason, has criminal record, or is a multi-state offender, the applicant should expect significant delays. The person being fingerprinted can reduce the possibility of having the application delayed by explaining their circumstances fully and completely on a separate sheet, provide a copy of the court's journal entry showing the final disposition of your arrest and/or conviction, and the charge you were convicted of, if any and submit it with the application.
• Additional information may be required if any arrest show up on the criminal background check that cannot clearly be identified as not related to dealing in motor vehicles.
• If the applicant answers "Yes" to any question, the applicant must provide journal entries showing final disposition and written explanation with the application for license. Failure to do so will result in the delay in issuance of the license.

Issuance of a license will take 4-6 weeks if using fingerprint card, so be sure to start the process early enough to get your license in time for the event.

Persons whose current license is lost, mutilated or destroyed may apply for a duplicate license.

Renewal/Transfer
Persons who need to renew and transfer their license from one dealership to another.

Transfer/Reinstatement
Persons who hold a valid Ohio Salespersons License may transfer their license from one licensed dealership to another or reinstate a license if rehired after leaving a dealership. A transfer is not necessary if the salesperson is simply moving to another dealership owned and operated by that same corporation, even if it is located in another county.
